For several years, Norderney has lacked obstetric care for
women from the beginning of pregnancy to the end of breastfeeding by a midwife, which has resulted in a shortage of care
with an average of around 40 births per year.
With the closure of the obstetrics department in the hospital in 2012 at the latest, there was no longer any basis for this important activity on Norderney.
The town of Norderney had already addressed this issue some time ago,
however, the general conditions for midwifery have become increasingly difficult in recent years, so that for a long time there was hardly any possibility of improving the situation on the island.
Now, after many efforts and discussions, a solution has been found.
Now, after many efforts and discussions involving the "Nor-
derneyer Inselzwerge", Mayor Frank Ulrichs and Ms Anne Böing from the town of Norderney's community work, a solution has been found to meet the needs of young mothers and pregnant women.
The midwife Natalie Witte from Hagermarsch has agreed to hold a weekly parents' meeting on Norderney
in the rooms of Mrs. Karin Rass's practice
(Jann-Berghaus-Straße), which she kindly makes available free of charge to
.
The parents' meeting is a needs-based offer for parents-to-be and families with
small children to help them cope well with everyday family life and the new challenges
. Parents can exchange ideas, learn from each other and share experiences in an informal and supportive environment at
. Conventional check-ups for pregnant women
cannot take place as part of the parents' meeting. These
will continue to be carried out by the respective gynaecologist (as is also
regularly practised on the mainland).
The parents' meeting on Norderney is planned for Saturdays from 10.00 a.m. to
12.00 noon. In the run-up to the offer, it is possible to register by telephone with Ms Witte at
and to arrange individual consultation appointments at
mine.
For organizational reasons, the offer cannot start until October of this year.
The first date for the course is scheduled for Saturday, October 7.
Individual consultation appointments and the recommended pre-registration
for the parents' meeting can be arranged by telephone from September onwards by calling 0176
64339684.
Last week, the administrative committee agreed that the town of
Norderney would bear the costs incurred for this on a permanent basis and provide Ms. Witte with all the support she needs to carry out
her work within the scope of her possibilities.
Mayor Frank Ulrichs is delighted and equally relieved that
this new midwifery service will relieve parents on Norderney of a major concern and
burden.
"Ms. Witte is a likeable and dedicated midwife who showed great interest in improving the situation on Nor-
derney and supporting us in our discussions, for which I am very grateful to her, as
it is almost impossible to make the effort economically viable," says the mayor. "We will therefore
do everything we can to enable Ms. Witte to carry out her important work."
