Environment

Welcome to the Environment section of the City of Norderney!

On this page we would like to give you an insight into our work on the subject of the environment . Here you will find information on current, future and past environmental projects of the town of Norderney.

The island of Norderney, the second largest of the East Frisian islands, is home to a diverse natural landscape that is largely shaped by the tides of the North Sea. It consists mainly of sandy beaches, dunes and salt marshes, which provide important habitats for various plant and animal species, including some rarely encountered bird species such as the white-tailed eagle and oystercatcher.

Norderney is heavily influenced by tourism on the one hand, but nature conservation plays an important role here on the other. The island is located in the transition area between the North Sea and the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park.
The national park is one of the largest protected areas for mudflats in the world and provides a habitat for a variety of marine and coastal life. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009. In addition, the bird sanctuary on Norderney is one of the most important resting and breeding grounds for seabirds and migratory birds from all over the world, embedded in the strictly protected Natura 2000 area and the flora and fauna habitat. Norderney is therefore of outstanding international importance in terms of geological and ecological processes as well as its significance for the preservation of biodiversity.

Another challenge is dealing with the effects of climate change to which the island is exposed. As a result, extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and sea levels are rising in the long term, which poses a threat to the population as well as the island's flora and fauna. The extraordinary natural value of the island needs to be preserved through protective measures in order to protect the habitat for flora and fauna, but also for the people who live, work or vacation there.

We invite you to find out more about our projects and get actively involved in environmental protection. Together we can help to protect the island's environment and preserve the uniqueness of Norderney.
