Civil status documents
The Norderney town archive contains a large number of interesting documents on personal and family history as well as on residential buildings (succession of ownership) and commercial enterprises.
Important note: In future, the town archive will also make registers and directories that are important for research available on the Internet. The following address books can already be used:
- Address book 1882
- Address book 1895
- Address book 1905
- Address book 1911
- Address book 1935
- Address book 1954
In accordance with the Civil Status Act (valid from January 1, 2009), the Norderney registry office has handed over the civil status registers (first registers of births, marriages and deaths) together with the associated collective files to the town archive for permanent storage.
The civil status registers kept since October 1874 can be inspected in the town archive or written information (including copies) can be provided on request.
Use is governed by the provisions of the Lower Saxony Archive Act, taking into account the following deadlines:
- 30 years for death registers
- 80 years for marriage register
- 110 years for birth registers
The Norderney registry office (Ms. Jule Heinen), Tel. 04932/920 216, jule.heinen@norderney.de is still responsible for information and certifications from the civil status registers subject to retention periods.
Information on civil status cases prior to 1874 can be obtained from the church office of the Ev.Luth. parish of Norderney (Tel. 04932/937210) or the office of the Catholic parish of St. Ludgerus (Tel. 04932/456).
For the families of the Protestant-Lutheran parish (1688 - 1900) the Ortssippenbuch Norderney, edited by Jörg Alfred Aggen, is a reliable source (Ostfrieslands Ortssippenbücher Band 67, ed. by the Upstalsboom-Gesellschaft für historische Personenforschung und Bevölkerungs- geschichte in Ostfriesland e.V., Aurich 2003).
