Election worker

Election worker

Whether European, Bundestag, state or local elections - the right to vote is one of the cornerstones of democracy and is a fundamental political right.

Electoral assistants are essential for holding elections. They form the foundation of the self-organization of the election by the people and are therefore the most important supporters of the electoral process. The electoral assistants work in electoral boards.

The electoral boards are appointed by the municipal authorities before each election. If possible, they should be appointed from the eligible voters of the municipality and, if possible, from the eligible voters of the electoral district.

An election committee has the following tasks, among others:

  • Ensure the proper conduct of the election
  • Ensure peace and order in the polling station
  • Verification of eligibility to vote on the basis of the electoral roll
  • Verification of ballot papers
  • Issue of the ballot paper
  • Note on participation in the electoral roll
  • Release of the ballot box for insertion of the ballot paper,
  • If necessary, assistance with voting by voters with disabilities
  • Counting the voters
  • Counting the votes
  • Determination of the provisional election result as part of a so-called quick report, which is forwarded to the municipal authority
  • Determination of the election result in the constituency

Minutes of the election procedure and the determination and ascertainment of the election result must be prepared by the secretary of the election committee, which must be approved and signed by the members of the election committee.

The electoral boards must make preparations before the polling stations open at 8:00 am. The polling stations are open until 18:00. This is followed by the count. Depending on the size of the election, this can take several hours.

As a kind of expense allowance, election assistants receive a so-called refreshment allowance. This is staggered according to special responsibility and workload.
